You probably know the classic bible story, whether from Sunday school or another version. Most western religions have a version of it that goes something like this: The armies of Israel and Philistine are at opposing sides of the Elah Valley preparing for battle when the Philistines propose a 1-on-1, winner-take-all fight. They had Goliath, he is enormous, carrying multiple intimidating weapons and shields. He asks for an opponent. No one on the Israeli side volunteers until finally a 14 year old shepherd boy name David stands up. David has a small sling and little else. The two battle and unexpectedly David wins with a single shot right between Goliath's eyes. Then he beheaded the giant.
That's the way the story goes. And while the end result has David the victor, almost everything else about the story is completely wrong.
It's not quite as dramatic, but I'd like to share a similar story about Oppomed and an extremely well-known international job board that we'll call AJ. The "battle" is a virtual job fair for experienced RNs.
Let's break down the numbers:
How many candidates signed up?
How many of those candidates showed up?
How many that showed up were viable candidates? (meaning they meet the minimum qualifications to be selected for the position)
How many hires did we make?
How much did we spend?
$5,000 in addition to $7,500 monthly spend.
$0 additional. Virtual events are included
How did a website with a few hundred monthly visitors out-perform one of the best known names in hiring?
Speed. AJ is a Data company. Even though it might seem easy, they still want the candidate to input data into their site. It's quick, but it's another page of registration, and nurses are hesitant to add their info. On Oppomed, candidates have the option to join the site, but it is not required.
Broad generality vs powerful specialization. The registration forms on AJ are designed to capture the minimum amount of info, and regardless of the candidates answers, they are allowed to register for the event. Oppomed forms are intuitive and intelligent, they only allow users that meet the minimum qualifications to proceed and register for the event. According to one nurse, the Oppomed registration and process simply "felt more genuine".
Decision makers aka nurse managers get involved much earlier using the Oppomed platform. Nurse Managers are not on Indeed, nor should they be. Oppomed can connect candidates with Nurse Managers without adding more work or jeopardizing confidentiality and EEOC issues. The Oppomed platform works just like a traditional job fair when it comes to Hiring Managers. Come on in, let's meet.
The goal. To be blunt, AJ isn't as concerned whether you fill your positions. It's a data company; employer and candidate data is quite valuable on a large scale. Oppomed is not a big data machine, we are actually here to help you meet more nurses and hire more nurses.
Back to David and Goliath:
Full credit to Malcom Gladwell for giving an in-depth explanation of how the scales of battle were unbalanced. I do not want to take away from him or plagiarize, so while Gladwell opened my eyes to the reality of this story, I will point out another fact he did not mention.
Think about that sling. Now imagine practicing for a full day, spin>release, spin>release, spin>release.
Now imagine practicing that every day for a year. By the end of the year, you can consistently hit targets 10-20 feet away.
And now, imagine practicing with your sling every single day for 11 years (I'm assuming David did not use a sling before the age of 3). You can probably load, spin, and release with your eyes closed. And your projectile can hit moving targets 99 out of 100 times.
Do you see the point? Goliath was by far bigger, stronger, and an obvious choice to represent the Philistines in 1-on-1 battle, but none of that mattered because David was fast and accurate. The story says that Goliath laughed when he saw David, in reality, he was probably terrified.
Oppomed is fast and targeted to healthcare. If you need a platform to hire sales engineers, HR managers, and a CIO for your graphics design firm, then we're probably not the right fit. Oppomed is focused on getting nurses and healthcare professionals to your facility as quickly and easily as possible.
The devil is in the details: This is based on a comparison of virtual hiring events conducted using the Oppomed platform on September 13, 2021and the "AJ" platform on December 15, 2021. The hospital is the same, an 800+ bed facility in North Carolina. Nurse RN recruitment #RN #registerednurse
